NSCDC FCT COMMAND HOLDS SENSITIZATION SEMINAR TO COMMEMORATE WORLD DAY AGAINST TRAFFICKING IN PERSON.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, Anti Human Trafficking and Irregular Migration Unit, in collaboration with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), has organized a sensitization Seminar to commemorate this year's World Day Against Trafficking in Persons.
The seminar with the theme "The Menace of Human Trafficking in Nigeria: The Way Forward", held at the FCT Command Headquarters, Wuse Zone 5, Abuja, was intended to create awareness on the dangers of human trafficking and the need to mitigate the risk.
Declaring the seminar open, the Commandant of the NSCDC FCT Command, Olusola Odumosu, PhD, said, human trafficking was not only a criminal act but a grave violation of human rights, affecting millions globally especially children.
Odumosu, who was represented by his second in command Deputy Commandant of Corps, BP Hussaini, stated that the event was a call for stronger policy implementation, improve community sensitization and enhance collaboration among security agencies, schools, religious bodies and advocacy groups.
"Human trafficking is a global crisis that cuts across borders with victims being trafficked for a wide range of exploitative purposes like forced labour and sexual abuse, domestic servitude, organ harvesting amongst other inhuman practices"
"Our focus today is on the pervasive nature of this crimes, it's devastating impact on victims and the collective responsibility we all must share in eradicating it".
The FCT Command Boss, posited that it is only in working together with other government agencies, civil societies and the public, will they truly protect the vulnerable and break the cycle of exploitation.
In her remarks, the Director General of NAPTIP, Haj. Binta Lami Bello, commended the NSCDC for organizing the sensitization Seminar, stating that human trafficking and Irregular Migration are terrible menace and urged all stakeholders to join hands to end the evil in the society.
The DG, who was represented by the Direction of Public Enlightenment, Kehinde Akomolafe, maintained that human trafficking has no respect for age or gender and as such, concerted efforts must be made to end the menace.
Highlights of the event were a presentation by a student from Hill Christian School, Maitama, on the consequences of Trafficking and the long lasting effects on victims as well as Road Walk.
