SAFE SCHOOL INITIATIVE: NSCDC PARTNERS YAKUBU GOWON UNIVERSITY SUES FOR EFFECTIVE SECURITY COVERAGE




The Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi mni, OFR in his pragmatic move has assured the Management and authorities of the Yakubu Gowon University of enhanced security as part of the Corps' Safe Schools Initiative meant to create enabling and secured environment for Staff and Students of Institutions and forestall the menace of attacks through kidnapping, abduction and terrorism.


The NSCDC Boss made this known during a Courtesy visit to his office by the Acting Vice Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University; Professor Lar Patricia Manko.


Speaking at the NSCDC National Headquarters in Abuja, the University Don said his visit premise on the need to collaborate and address the rising security challenges confronting the Institution.


The Acting Vice Chancellor commended the NSCDC Commandant General for his unwavering commitment and strategic efforts in combating insecurity across the country.


She particularly applauded the CG's proactive leadership and dynamic approach which has continued to make meaningful impact nationwide.


Prof. Manko, while expressing concern; highlighted the increasing threat of insecurity within and around the University campus, which she said has inflicted fear and apprehension among students and academic staff residing in the institution’s quarters.


"On behalf of the University management I want to appeal to the CG for urgent intervention in ensuring a safer and more conducive environment for learning and research"


Butressing the Acting VC's demand; the Chief Security Officer, Wing Commander Waziri Canon (Rtd) echoed the Acting Vice Chancellor’s concerns and disclosed that the University is battling challenges such as vandalism, theft, attempted kidnapping and other security threats.


He emphasized on the urgent need for enhanced security presence which would significantly boost the confidence of staff and students.


The CG however congratulated Professor Manko on her recent appointment as Acting Vice Chancellor and assured the university leadership of the Corps' readiness to support the institution’s security architecture.


He promised that NSCDC armed personnel specialized units would be deployed to the University to strengthen security and safeguard lives and property.


Prof. Audi reiterated the NSCDC mandate to protect critical national assets and infrastructure as well as the Safe Schools Initiative program commissioned to strengthen security within educational institutions, and reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to partner with stakeholders in combating insecurity.
