Senate summons minister over WAEC mass failure
The Senate yesterday invited the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu over recurring mass failure in the West African Examination Council (WAEC).
The summon followed a motion by Senator Umaru Kurfi (APC, Katsina) and seconded by Senator Jibrin Barau (APC, Kano).
The minister is expected to appear before the Senate committee on Education (Basic and Secondary) chaired by Senator Aliyu Wamakko (APC, Sokoto).
Adamu is to appear with the Head, National office of WAEC and any relevant stakeholders for interactive session to identify the causes of the recurring mass failure. The committee is to submit a comprehensive report to the Senate within one month.
Kurfi said the mass failure has continued unabated annually, thus negating the development of the country’s education sector.
Seconding the motion, Barau described the development as worrisome, saying there was need for urgent intervention.
Senate President Bukola Saraki said his office was organising a roundtable to address challenges facing the country’s education sector
