About three policemen are currently undergoing orderly room trial in Anambra State for their alleged involvement in extortion.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mr Sam Okaula, who disclosed this when a group of journalists from Onitsha paid him a courtesy visit in his office, said at the end of the trial, any of them found wanting would be severely dealt with to serve as a deterrent to others.
He, therefore, warned policemen against extorting money from the public, reminding them that the tripartite monitoring squads from the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Zone 9 Command, Umuahia and Anambra Command, Awka’s are all out to arrest all the extortionists.
He commended journalists in the state for the existing cordial relationship between them and the state police command, adding that they should equally assist the command in exposing the criminals and extortionists.
On the alleged human rights abuses and killing of Biafra agitators who were on peaceful demonstrations, Okaula declined comments on the ground that such an allegation is a nationwide affair.
He disclosed that the synergy between the police and other security agencies in the state was instrumental to making Anambra the safest state in the country, adding that the synergy is waxing stronger.
Responding, leaders of the group, Nweke Nweke and Okechukwu Akaneme, commanded Okaula for the effective security of the state to the satisfaction of law-abiding citizens. They urged him not to relent, to avoid return of heinous crime in the state.
Also speaking, the Divisional Police Officer at Fegge, Onitsha, Rabiu Garba (SP) told the journalist in his office during a similar courtesy visit that his Division does not joke with reliable information from the public, particularly from journalists, adding that he had on several occasions, succeeded with such information. - The Authority
