Stop smear campaign against Okiro, police officers warned

Mike Okiro
THE Integrity Group Against Corruption has raised the alarm over the plot by some aggrieved police officers to smear the good image of the chairman, Police Service Commission (PSC), Sir Mike Mbama Okiro.
In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Alhaji Suleiman Ajibade, Publicity Secretary, Emeka Ndubueze and Treasurer, Mallam Ibrahim Argungu, the group noted that the disgruntled officers were working in collaboration with some unscrupulous politicians and civil society groups to discredit the former Inspector General of Police for selfish reasons, despite all his efforts to redress the lopsided promotion and posting in the Nigeria Police.
It read: “Since his appointment in June 2013, he has rectified several lopsided promotions and postings, especially ethnic imbalance, in the Nigeria Police Force (NPF),” the statement read.
Pursuant to their selfish agenda, the group said it had uncovered the plot by the corrupt officers who were unhappy with the reform carried out by the Okiro leadership to “use the press, social media and civil society groups with cooked up allegations to smear the good image of the chairman.”
Commending the former IG for his good reforms, it added: “The chairman always exhibit professionalism and uprightness without sentiments in approving promotions, postings and retirements.”
According to the group, the smear campaign was being masterminded by aggrieved officers who were unhappy with the recent promotion and recommendations by the immediate past Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, warning them to channel their grievances to the appropriate authority, instead of engaging civil society groups and the press to seek undue redress.
Also commending Okiro for his transparent leadership in the recent recruitment exercise, it said: “To avoid corruption and ensure probity, Okiro gave stern warning to his staff and police officers in the current recruitment of 10,000 policemen that only those qualified should be recruited, no godfatherism.”
