Reps urge security agencies to intervene in Abia, C'River boundary dispute

The House of Repre­sentatives has urged the National Bound­ary Commission to urgently commence the demarcation of the boundary between Eluelu Ariam in Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia and Abama commu­nity in Akwa Ibom State.

This is sequel to the adop­tion of a motion moved by member representing Ik­wuano/Umuahia North, South Federal Constituen­cy of Abia State, Rep. Sam Onuigbo.

Moving the motion, Onuigbo called on security agencies to quickly arrest the situation in order to prevent further loss of lives and destruction of property in the communities.

“We have already lost two lives and they are continu­ing with the crisis.

“If government fails to in­tervene at this point to nip the whole thing in the bud we probably at the end of the day be harvesting more problems. Or be experienc­ing the kind of problem that is going on in Cross River state where communal clashes like this have led to so many people, over a hun­dred people being killed.

``We do not want this to deteriorate to that situ­ation and that is why we are calling on the federal government, the police, the National Boundary Com­mission and all the other security agencies to move in and arrest the situation,’’ Onuigbo said.

The lawmaker added that timely intervention by the relevant authorities will put an end to the frequent com­munal clashes between the two communities.

The House, therefore mandated its committees on Army, Police Affairs, Special Duties and Legisla­tive Compliance to ensure implementation.

The House also urged the military authorities to di­rect the military command­er stationed in the border to address the deteriorating security situation.
